Accreditation is the process by which institutes of higher learning are evaluated to ensure that the education they provide meets acceptable standards. Although the United States Department of Education is not directly responsible for accrediting academic programs, it monitors accreditation agencies to ensure they are reliable authorities as to the quality of education or training provided by institutes of higher learning.
